      Death.
      That was all he saw.
      All he thought of.
      All he was aware of.
      Death.
      Despair.
      Betrayal.
Then the crossing was over as abruptly as it started. He stood, stony-faced, tears streaking down his face, staring at the rocky, depressing walls of the Underwhere. He sat there with the salty liquid falling onto the ground for as long as time itself, it seemed.
      "'Ey!"
A voice, gruff, serious, called out to him. He continued to stare, paying no mind.
      "HEY!"
They came over to him, small devils in suits. D-Men. He didn't care. He just stared. He was unable to accept the horrifying, awful event that had happened to him.
      He was dead.
"Hey buster, look here," one of the D-Men said. He wearily did as he was told, looking up at the D-Man. "You're new here eh? You seem shocked. Then again, most do." He opened his mouth, then closed it again, the raw strength of his emotions rendering his vocal chords useless. "Spit it out!" the other D-Man ordered coldly.
"Where...am I?" he managed to say, though he need not be told it.
"Hah! You're in the Underwhere buddy."
Too distraught to laugh at the odd name, he nodded. Hell. This was Hell. The Land of the Dead. The Gateway to Heaven. The place where the evil souls of life were locked up to suffer. This was where he was. He sighed.
"You've got a body, huh?" The D-Man prodded him with his weapon. "Well, sorta." He had retained his body, but it was leaking a black liquid and a black gas. He was deteriorating. "Well, you know what newbies have to do." They grabbed his arms. "Time to go see Queen Jaydes."

He ran through the building as fast as he could, unbelievable shock and pain resonating through him. It wasn't physical though. It was emotional. He was being hunted.
A gunshot rang out, blasting through the wall beside him. "You can't run!" a woman's voice called out. It sounded strained, sad, yet it was enraged at the same time. She had good reason to be; she had been betrayed.
      Betrayed by him.
Another shot rang out, narrowly missing him. His breathing came out in gasps. Why didn't he use his damn powers?! He could kill her easily!
      But he knew he couldn't.
He was dead long the moment she picked up the weapon. He would never hurt her.
      But she would hurt him.
Another shot rang out and pain blasted up his leg and into his brain as the bullet imbedded itself into the back of his knee.
He fell, arms flailing, his heart breaking.

The calm sounds of the eerie River Twygz filled his ears as the D-Men escorted him to Jaydes. Charold, the deformed owner of the boat that passed the river, paddled them with his enormous oar in a rhythmic motion, calming to most peoples' ears.
      But not his.
Tears leaked down his cheeks again. He still remembered those moments when she had picked up the weapon and pointed it at him, staring at him as if he were the devil himself.
You traitor! You murderer! YOU MONSTER!
He pounded his face with his fists, his heart convulsing with a rigid sadness. All he could think about was what he had done to so many. Why?! Why did I do it?! The path to his destruction had laid itself out the day he'd first murdered in cold blood, using his accursed powers. It had been like a drug to him. He loved it. He loved the metallic taste of blood on his tongue, he loved the look of terror and pleading on his victims' faces before he ended their misery. He loved to see them suffer, to beg for death and then be denied it for a while. He needed more, so he killed more. It was pure bliss. Until...
Go ahead...kill me. You've murdered before, why not again? You pathetic, disgusting, vile monster!
      He couldn't kill her...

He kneeled in front of Jaydes, the Queen of the Dead. She weighed his sins in his past life, but he knew it would do no good.
"You aren't deserving of the Overthere,' she said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "You will stay in the Underwhere for eternity." His body was oozing the dark substance more quickly now. Soon he would disappear into nothingness. No one wanted that.  "You have three options: become a D-Man and work for me, become a Shayde and wander this place forever, or keep your body preserved and be locked up in a cell for the rest of your aftergame. What is your choice?" He knew he didn't have long before he faded away. He knew what his answer would be.
      "My answer...is nothing."
      He turned and ran.

He ran. He ran like on that day. The day that seemed like both a day ago and a thousand years. He ran, tears streaming down his face, remembering the last moments of his life with a painful grief.

She had the gun pointed at him, merciless, primal rage in her eyes. Tears lined her cheeks, marks of the hurt she was feeling from his betrayal. She would kill. She wouldn't care. Not now. She hated him. She hated him more than anything in the world.
      He had killed her family.
In a cruel, evil act of murder, he had killed her family. Why?
"WHY?!" she screamed, the gun pointed at his face. "WHY DID YOU DO IT?!" She was enraged beyond all reason. He had no reason left in him either.
Why had he done it? He had a reason. He had one reason. But it wasn't a good one.
"I did it..." he said quietly. "Because...I wanted you all to myself...just you and I, together forever!" The pit in his gut seemed to bulge. He felt a bizarre giddiness at the situation; he laughed. He laughed like a madman, like someone who had lost everything he had in the world and his sanity had been taken in the end. "I love you! I love you more than anything in this world! I LOVE-"
The bullet to his forehead had ended his life before his final proclamation.

Now, lying on the edge of the River Twygz, crying, laughing, leaking the black substances, he felt one thing he never thought he'd feel: regret. He regretted everything he had ever done. He regretted using his powers for evil, to kill. He regretted that selfish act that he had thought would seal his fate with her. He heard the D-Men's footsteps, chasing him. He stood up and faced them, his body degrading.
"Halt and come with us!" they ordered, brandishing their weapons.
"Why?" he asked. "Why bother?" He looked at his feet. "Locked up...wandering forever...eternal servitude...why?" The D-Men stepped closer, going in for the capture. "A life without her is meaningless...and so is an afterlife, however I spend it."
He looked up, imagining skies and soaring clouds, only seeing a rocky ceiling. He took a breath and screamed out his last, final proclamation:
      "I LOVE YOU!"
Smiling, as if a million tonnes had been removed from his shoulders, he tipped backwards into the River Twygz. He hit the water with a splash and sank, dissolving, to the lakebed. He felt the cold grip of the Underhands, but he didn't care. All he could think about was her in the final moments of his afterlife.
He touched the bottom for but a moment before he disappeared completely.
Well, this is another original story. You could kinda say it's a Super Mario fanfic, considering the Underwhere is where it takes place, but...it makes for such a great Hell!

Yeah, so two different things inspired me to write this. The first is a manga called "Rasetsu." It's a supernatural series that involves a girl named Rasetsu. Once in her life an evil spirit found her and caught her, saying that he loved her. He said that he would take her away with him (not a good thing) unless she found her true love by the age of 20. I found it weird that a demon could love someone and yet want to do harm to the person he loved. The second was a One-Shot Mario fanfic made by :iconmaybesomecake: called "Luvbi's Dark Prince." It involves Luvbi from Super Paper Mario falling in love with a Shayde who had been particularly evil in his life.

Well, I hope you enjoy it, because I enjoyed writing it.
